Actually, states and governments do not take assets from people who go into nursing homes or who require long-term care. The reality is that if people who are in nursing homes cannot afford to pay for that care, they often are in a situation where they must apply for Medicaid benefits. Those benefits are only payable to people who meet certain asset and income tests. Therefore, if they have assets, those assets have to be depleted prior to the qualification for Medicaid benefits to be received and pay for the nursing home care.
